VR is revolutionizing professional development by immersing learners in practical scenarios. At UNC Blue Sky, we maximized this technology for two initiatives: IDEA VR, a product for corporate diversity training and BELIEVE VR, a product for cross-functional teamwork practice in healthcare settings. These simulations refine learners' decision-making and interpersonal skills, privately and risk-free.
Design Process
Applying Theory
We utilized cognitive load, productive failure, and microlearning theories to enhance retention and safety in our VR environments.
Interviewing
We integrated realistic scenarios through expert interviews, crafting empathy maps tailored to individual learner problem-solving approaches.
Filming & Development
Partnering with experts, we developed VR content optimized for immersive experiences using 3D Vista and the Pico G3 Headset.
Facilitation
We delivered a comprehensive guide for clients, featuring VR blended learning best practices, lesson plans, discussion questions, and technical support.

Storytelling with Augmented Reality (AR)
Course project
Puzzle of Belonging is an interactive, digitized children's book for 3rd graders. The story's main character, Theo, is a puzzle piece that doesn't seem to "fit" with his peers and struggles to find sense of belonging. Theo's journey to self-acceptance is designed to foster social and emotional learning for young readers. The book was written and illustrated by generative AI models and augmented in Adobe Aero.
Design Process
Storyline Development
We used ChatGPT to generate our storyline draft, adapting character names, themes, and vocabulary to suit our target audience.
Illustration Process
After editing the story, we created characters, settings, and assets using Adobe Firefly, continuously refining for consistent style.
3D Augmentation
We transformed our 2D illustrations into 3D renderings using Kaedim. These assets were modified with remodeling and coloring techniques to better depict our characters. These assets were then imported into Adobe Aero to augment our scenes with animations and narration. Once completed, these scenes were exported as QR codes and embedded into the pages of our digital book.
